San Leandro Cutting Edge Battery Business Coreshell Wins East Bay Innovation Award
San Leandro-based Coreshell, a sustainable battery manufacturing company, has won a highly coveted East Bay Innovation Award for technology from the East Bay Economic Development Alliance (East Bay EDA).
The Innovation Awards highlight and celebrate exceptional companies and organizations that shape the East Bay’s legacy of innovation. San Leandro’s Coreshell was one of 12 awardees selected by groups of industry experts from a pool of over 100 applicants and nominations in competitive categories that included catalyst, community impact, manufacturing, and technology at the March 27th awards ceremony.
One of Coreshell’s unique developments is a negative (anode) terminal for lithium-ion batteries made from silicon which allows lower-cost, higher-energy, and lighter-weight batteries. Silicon is a more affordable and domestically available anode material than the more typical graphite, leading to more affordable batteries with reduced risk of supply chain issues. In addition, the company has shown that its cells provide more than 30% higher energy density than graphite-based cells allowing for a greater range with a smaller and lighter battery.
The recognition of Coreshell’s technology further reinforces San Leandro’s reputation as a home for a growing number of battery businesses with a range of innovative developments that address both transportation and grid storage needs. Other Industry representatives located in San Leandro include LYTEN (sulfur-lithium), Quino Energy (water-based flow), Zelos Energy (manganese-zinc), and Inlyte Energy (sodium-iron).
The City of San Leandro supports the growth of sustainable battery and other manufacturing and green-tech businesses as part of an Innovation Action Plan and overall Economic Development Strategy.
Congratulations Coreshell!
