On Friday, October 17, 2025, at the Hilton Union Square in San Francisco, San Leandro business On October 17, 2025, San Leandro‑based Coreshell Technologies outcompeted over ten thousand US and international startups to capture the $1 million grand prize at the global Startup World Cup in San Francisco. Coreshell’s breakthrough silicon anode technology enables lighter, longer-lasting, and more efficient batteries for EVs and other commercial applications, including robotics and defense.
In receiving the award, Coreshell CEO Jonathan Tan said, “I’m incredibly honored that Coreshell has been named the winner of the 2025 Startup World Cup! This recognition reflects our team’s relentless work transforming battery materials, and another step forward on our journey to drive the future of energy.”
This acknowledgment not only underscores Coreshell’s cutting‑edge work in battery technology but also reinforces San Leandro as a vibrant hub for clean tech and an ecosystem where innovation isn’t just supported, it’s expected.
“Coreshell’s victory is a proud moment for San Leandro,” added Mayor Juan González. “It demonstrates not only the talent and innovation coming out of our city, but the strength of our entrepreneurial ecosystem. Our streamlined permit process, proactive city staff, and relationship-focused approach make San Leandro a place where businesses feel supported from day one.”
Cicely Li, Coreshell’s Director of Operations, agreed. “We’d heard about the Startup World Cup, but it took the San Leandro Economic Development Team’s encouragement to help us apply and benefit from the grand prize and the marketing power that the award brings.”
Earlier this year, the company received the manufacturing award at the 2025 East Bay Innovation Awards, selected from more than 100 applicants. Coreshell has also secured significant strategic funding and public-sector grant support — including a multi-million-dollar award from the California Energy Commission to advance domestically sourced battery manufacturing in the East Bay. Coreshell is currently raising Series B funding and continues to scale its production in San Leandro.
