City Doubles Down on Retail Recruitment at ICSC Monterey

On March 24 and 25, Economic Development staff participated in the 2026 ICSC (International Council of Shopping Centers) Conference in Monterey, CA. City staff attends the conference each year to attract new retail and redevelopment, as well as to build partnerships and learn more about emerging trends in the retail market.  

Attendance at the conference reinforces San Leandro’s reputation in the retail industry and provides an opportunity to market San Leandro to real estate brokers, retailers, and developers. Staff shared the new Retail Opportunities Flyer and Website (sanleandro.org/retail). Meetings were held to connect with retailers and promote key opportunity sites, including Bayfair Mall, Estudillo Center, and Greenhouse Marketplace.  

City staff gained valuable insight into current market trends, including experiential retail, food and beverage concepts, and mixed-use development. Overall, staff left the conference with an expanded network of industry contacts and a stronger pipeline of potential projects, with several conversations expected to progress over the next 6 to 18 months.
